The State Records and Archives Department of Việt Nam and its network of some 70 provincial and municipal archives are responsible for keeping, caring for and making accessible records of the events and decisions that shaped the nation, including central and local records of the Việt kings, the French colonial government, the US-backed Government of South Việt Nam, the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam and the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam.
While seasonal festivals such as Tết nguyên đán (Vietnamese New Year) and Tết trung thu (Mid Autumn Festival) are celebrated throughout the country, the majority of Việt Nam's festivals are related to local traditions or linked to religious ceremonies of some description, and often involve traditional games such as tug-of-war, sports such as wrestling or cock fighting and performances of traditional dances, songs and dramas.
Arts festivals in the western sense (generally known as liên hoan) are a fairly recent development in Việt Nam.
Since Việt Nam opened its doors to the world in the late 1980s international festivals have also been developed, but events involving foreign product such as the European Union Jazz Festival (Liên hoan Nhạc Jazz EU), the European Union Film Festival (Liên hoan Phim Châu Âu), the Huế International Sculpture Symposium (Trại Sáng tác Điêu khắc Quốc tế) Huế and the Huế Festival (Liên hoan Huế) remain heavily dependent on the continued availability of overseas funding.
