During the early Doi moi (renovation) period the “social realism” style emerged in Vietnamese cinema. Faced with new challenges and opportunities, the movie companies turned their attention away from heroic war stories and began searching for new subject

The gamble was once of the first films to fairly honestly portray the “social evils” of gambling, prostitution and drugs in a non-ideological manner. Melodrama, yes, but with characters and situations that many common people can identify with.

Shot entirely on location in the north, it is not only the scenery that is arresting . Director Ninh chose a colorful supporting cast of “never do wells” with appropriate faces. Mai is played by the well-known actress Thu Ha and Don Duong is the track driver, Chien.
